Neo-Nazi leader of Golden Dawn released from prison early, Greek left on alert

Nikos Michaloliakos, the leader of the Greek neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn, has been released from prison without even completing half of his sentence.

Greek media reports that the 67-year-old was allowed by a judicial council to serve the remainder of his 13-year sentence under house arrest, for health reasons.

This conditional release after 5 years in prison has caused anger among left-wing parties, which argue that justice should not have shown mercy to such a figure.

This is the second time Michaloliakos has been released from prison following his conviction in 2020 for a series of violent attacks on immigrants and political opponents, carried out by Golden Dawn supporters.

He was temporarily released in May 2024, but returned to prison after judicial authorities decided that he had not shown good behavior.

Michaloliakos founded and led a party that was declared a criminal organization, linked to the murder of anti-fascist musician Pavlos Fyssas, as well as attempted murders of Egyptian fishermen and communist activists.

Golden Dawn became the third largest party in the 2012 Greek elections, taking advantage of the economic crisis and spreading a nationalist and anti-immigration rhetoric.

Although the party officially denied being neo-Nazi, it used Nazi-inspired symbolism, and Michaloliakos himself has shown sympathy for Nazi ideology, giving the Hitler salute at party rallies.

He and other former party deputies were found guilty of leading or belonging to an organized criminal group.
The Greek communist party KKE said the verdict should be overturned, adding that “the crimes of Golden Dawn have no expiration date in the conscience of the people and the youth.”
