They were determined. The three Austrian nuns, all in their early 80s, did not want to spend the rest of their lives in the nursing home, where they were taken against their will, as they claim, in December 2023.
Sister Bernadette, 88, Sister Regina, 86, and Sister Rita, 82, are the last three nuns at the Kloster Goldenstein monastery, just outside Salzburg.
The three nuns spent most of their lives at Schloss Goldenstein, a castle that has been a convent and private school for girls since 1877. The school, which began accepting boys in 2017, is still in operation.
Sister Bernadette attended the school, arriving as a teenager in 1948. One of her classmates was the Austrian actress Romy Schneider. Sister Regina arrived at the convent in 1958 and Sister Rita four years later.
All three continued to work at the school as teachers for many years. Sister Regina was the school principal.

However, the number of nuns decreased.
In 2022, the building was taken over by the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the Reichersberg Abbey, an Augustinian monastery. Markus Grasl from the abbey became the abbot of the monks.
The community was officially dissolved in early 2024, and the remaining nuns were granted lifelong residency permits, as long as their health and mental capacity permitted.
In December 2023, it was decided that they would be transferred to a Catholic nursing home.
In early September, the three nuns returned, with the help of a group of former students and a locksmith.
Church authorities are not happy with the development, but the nuns are.
When they first arrived there was no electricity or running water, which have been partially restored, while there is a constant flow of visitors, many of whom are their former students, who supply them with food and other supplies, while medical services are also provided.
The nuns say they are determined to stay.
