The European Parliament has passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, but only on condition that Hamas disbands and all hostages are released.
Reaching a consensus on the resolution has not been an easy task, with countries divided over specific wording for weeks. The original text emphasized the need for a permanent ceasefire.
The agreement was finally reached after an amendment tabled by conservative lawmakers was passed, insisting that Hamas must be dismantled for a ceasefire to take place and calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining hostages.
The resolution, which is non-binding and highly symbolic, was approved with 312 votes in favor, 131 against and 72 abstentions.
It marks the first time parliament has called for a ceasefire since agreeing to call for a humanitarian pause in October.
