Israel-Iran War / Europe takes over as negotiator, meeting with Tehran's

Switzerland will host a new round of talks tomorrow between Iran, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the European Union, focusing on the Iranian nuclear program. According to a diplomat from a Western European country who spoke to CNN, these discussions are taking place in close consultation with the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who is expected to take office in January 2026.

The official, who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the negotiations, described the talks as “exploratory” and aimed at “feeling the space” to understand the possibilities of reaching a possible agreement. He stressed that the meeting aims to test the parties’ willingness to find common ground, especially in the face of ongoing tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and international sanctions.

These talks come in a delicate context, following the previous failure to fully revive the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), from which the US withdrew in 2018 during the first Trump administration. Since then, Iran has increased its level of uranium enrichment, raising concerns in the West about the possible aims of its nuclear program.

The consultation with the Trump administration marks an early attempt by European powers to include the US in the process, given its decisive influence on any future deal. However, the European diplomat did not provide details on what specific issues will be discussed or whether there is a concrete agenda.

Analysts say the meeting could serve as a preliminary step to determine whether there is room for more substantive negotiations in the future, especially given the Trump administration's tough approach to Iran in the past. For now, all sides appear to be treading carefully, trying to balance their strategic interests in a tense region.

It has not yet been confirmed whether there will be an official statement after the talks conclude, but international attention remains focused on the results of this exploratory meeting.
