United States President Donald Trump called on Republican lawmakers to support a clean extension of Section 702 of the FISA Act, calling it essential to U.S. national security and military operations. Section 702 authorizes the targeted collection of specific types of foreign intelligence information.
In a post on the Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump declared that the US military has an “urgent need” for this legal instrument, linking it to successes in international operations. He specifically mentioned military activities in Venezuela and Iran as examples of the effectiveness of this oversight mechanism.
" The fact is, whether you like FISA or not, it is extremely important to our military ," Trump wrote, adding that some US generals consider it vital to current operations, especially in the context of engagements in Iran.
The president also said he had decided to put aside personal concerns about the law's potential impact on him as a citizen. In the past, Trump and his supporters have expressed doubts about the use of surveillance tools in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Meanwhile, US national security officials have warned of consequences for intelligence gathering if FISA 702 authority expires on April 20. On the other hand, civil liberties organizations, both on the left and right, argue that this law poses a risk to the privacy of American citizens.
