US President Donald Trump's son, Eric Trump, and his wife, Lara Trump, will accompany him on an official visit to China on May 14 and 15, in a move aimed at strengthening economic relations between the two countries.
Trump Organization spokeswoman Kimberly Benza said the couple was "proud" to be participating in the visit, stressing that Eric Trump's presence was in a personal capacity and in support of the president.
"Eric is deeply proud of his father and his achievements. He participates as a supportive son and has no business activities in China, nor plans to engage in them in the future," she said, adding that he will not participate in private meetings.
However, the presence of family members on such an official visit is expected to spark debate in Washington, due to the fact that Trump's wealth and business dealings are managed by his family.
The case brings to mind Trump's own criticism of former President Joe Biden, when his son Hunter Biden accompanied him to China while Biden was vice president. At the time, Trump accused Hunter Biden of using political influence for financial gain, accusations the Biden family has denied.
