Israel-Lebanon negotiations in Washington, first round of talks ends!

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA) reports that the first round of direct talks between Lebanese and Israeli delegations concluded today at the US State Department in Washington, DC.

This historic meeting, the first of its kind in more than 30 years, took place under the mediation of the United States, with the participation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The Lebanese delegation was led by Lebanese Ambassador to the US, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, while the Israeli side was led by Ambassador Yechiel Leiter. The talks focused primarily on the conditions for a ceasefire in the recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as other issues that could pave the way for deeper negotiations in the future.

Lebanon insisted on the immediate need to stop cross-border attacks, while Israel emphasized Hezbollah's disarmament under the November 2024 ceasefire agreement. The meeting took place despite strong opposition from Hezbollah, which called it "futile" and declared that it would not abide by any agreement that might emerge from it.

"The Lebanese government has made it clear during US-brokered talks with Israel that it no longer wants to be 'occupied' by Hezbollah and that there have been discussions about a long-term vision for a clearly defined border," Israel's ambassador to the US, Yechiel Leiter, told reporters after the talks concluded.

Full details of the results of the first round are expected to be made public, while Lebanese sources said the next round could take place soon if agreement is reached on the basic terms of the ceasefire. The development is considered an important diplomatic step in a tense region, but it remains to be seen whether it will lead to concrete progress or stall due to the deep-rooted positions of the parties.
