War in the Middle East, Trump attacks the British: I am very disappointed with
Donald Trump

Donald Trump has told the British newspaper The Telegraph that he is "very disappointed" with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for blocking the use of Diego Garcia to carry out attacks on Iran.

In an exclusive interview, the US president said the prime minister's initial refusal to allow US forces to use the base on the Chagos Islands was something that had "never happened before between our countries".

Britain had denied the US permission to carry out strikes from bases such as Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford, citing international law. However, the prime minister reversed course on Sunday evening and said he would allow the US access to Diego Garcia for “specific and limited defensive purposes”.

Trump said Sir Keir "took a long time" to change his mind.

“This has probably never happened before between our countries,” he told The Telegraph, adding that  “it seems he was concerned about the legality.”

The clash over Diego Garcia prompted the president to withdraw support for the prime minister's controversial Chagos deal, which envisages handing over sovereignty of the Indian Ocean territory to Mauritius and then leasing the military base.

"All of a sudden [Mauritius] was claiming ownership. He should have fought the case and kept it or forced someone else to take it, if you want to know the truth. But no, we were very disappointed with Keir," Trump told The Telegraph.

Two days after the launch of the US attacks on Iran, the president declared that the operation was "well ahead of schedule."

Trump suggested that Sir Keir should have approved the US use of Diego Garcia from the start because Iran was responsible for killing "a lot of people from your country".

"There are people without arms and legs, with faces disfigured by explosions. Iran is responsible for 95 percent of them. Those terrible events were caused by Iran," Trump said, without referring to specific cases.

“It would have been much better legally if he had simply retained ownership of the land and not given it to people who were not the legal owners,” he said.

Referring to Sir Keir's change of heart on Diego Garcia, he added: "It's helpful. It took a long time. A long time."

Sir Keir Starmer has given the US permission to use British military bases to strike Iran. Sir Keir, pictured speaking to the media over the weekend, only gave the permission on Sunday evening.

The prime minister also faces backlash from Republicans in Washington over the delay.

An hour after the prime minister's announcement on Sunday evening that he had granted permission for the use of the bases, an Iranian Shahed drone struck the British RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus with a single-strike.

British servicemen received a warning of a "security threat", asking them to take shelter as explosions were heard in the Limassol area where the base is located.

There were no casualties, but the Ministry of Defense has relocated the families of military personnel from the base.

Despite declaring that he supports destroying Iranian offensive capabilities "at source", Sir Keir has not authorized British troops to join the American-Israeli offensive.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in one of the first waves of attacks on Tehran. The Islamic Republic responded by striking US bases, Israeli military centers and civilian targets across the Middle East with missiles and drones.

Why Diego Garcia is essential for the US

British-owned Diego Garcia is located 2,400 miles off the southern coast of Iran. That puts it out of range of Iranian ballistic missiles but within the operational range of American B2 bombers.

Britain argues that the Chagos Islands sovereignty transfer agreement is the only way to guarantee the continued operation of the base. Under the agreement, the UK will lease Diego Garcia from Mauritius at a cost of £35 billion for the next 99 years.
