An unresolved war between the two countries could lead to World War III.
French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived at the White House where he met with US President Donald Trump to discuss the fate of Ukraine. The two leaders appeared to be smiling during their meeting and conversation in the Oval Office.
Speaking to the media during his meeting with Macron, Trump said he expects Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to come to Washington "this week or next week" to sign a deal with the US on Ukraine's rare earth minerals.
“I’m going to meet with President Zelensky. In fact, he could come this week or next week to sign the deal and… that would be great, I would like to meet him. We would meet in the Oval Office. So the deals are being worked out right now. They are very close to a final deal. It will be a deal with rare earths and various other things. And he would like to come, as I understand it, here, to sign it and that would be great with me, ” Trump said during a meeting in the Oval Office with French President Emmanuel Macron.
He added that he is not sure when he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, although he previously said it could happen in Saudi Arabia.
"I don't know when we'll talk. At some point I'll meet with President Putin ," he said.
Standing in the Oval Office, Trump was asked whether he would characterize Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "dictator," having previously used the word to describe Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky.
" I don't use those words lightly, we'll see how it all works out ," Trump said, adding that they have a " chance for a very good resolution " between Ukraine and Russia.
" An unresolved war between the two countries could lead to World War III," he added.
Trump further stated that the war in Ukraine could be over within weeks if all sides are smart.
" I think the war [in Ukraine] could be over soon, within weeks, if we're smart. If we're not smart, it's going to continue...we don't want that. Remember what I said, this could escalate into a third world war, we don't want that either," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
Trump shared a recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin during which the leaders agreed to begin negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Macron said they had a good discussion during a G7 call this morning and that he will discuss "long-term peace" in Ukraine with Trump today.
" Europe is ready to step up defense, but 'strong' US involvement is necessary to ensure that peace is achieved in Ukraine ," Macron said.
Trump was asked if he believed Ukraine would have to give up territory as part of any peace negotiations, and he left all options open.
" We'll see. It's a negotiation that has just begun. Retaking Ukrainian land occupied by Russia is not an easy thing to do ," he said.
Trump has previously suggested that Ukraine could reclaim "some" of its territory and last week said that Russia's occupation of Ukrainian soil means it "holds the cards" in negotiations.
Trump also said that Vladimir Putin would accept European peacekeepers in Ukraine if and when the war ends, a suggestion the Kremlin has repeatedly said it opposes.
The press then left the room in which Macron and Trump will continue the meeting away from the attention of the press and cameras.
