During the press conference from the EU Summit, a Norwegian journalist asked Zelensky what his hopes are for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people after three years of war.
" We hope to end the war this year ," he replied, adding that it has been "very difficult" for the entire nation.
Zelensky further said that in the short term, Ukraine needs security guarantees to prevent Russia's return in the coming years.
He stressed that membership in the EU and NATO would soon help Ukraine greatly. Zelensky recently admitted that he would step down as president if Ukraine became a member of NATO in exchange. Russia said it would not accept that as part of any peace deal.
Asked about his relationship with US President Donald Trump, Zelensky did not explicitly comment on their relationship, but said he hopes the United States will continue to support him, like all partners.
" We also must not lose this unity between Europe and the United States ," he said.
Recall that last week, Trump called the Ukrainian president "a dictator" and said he had done a "terrible job" leading Ukraine. This was followed by Zelensky's response that Trump was "living in a disinformation space" governed by Moscow.
