A fierce verbal clash erupted today at the opening of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference at UN headquarters in New York.
The clash began after Iran was elected as one of the 34 vice-chairs of the four-week conference. Iran was nominated by the Non-Aligned Movement, which includes 121 countries. The US delegation, supported by Australia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, expressed strong opposition.
The US representative, whose name was not immediately released, said the Trump administration was "deeply shocked" that a country like Iran, which has shown "contempt" for the treaty, would take on such an important position as vice president.
Russia, on the other hand, opposed any attempt to exclude Iran from this role. The Iranian ambassador to the UN in Vienna, Reza Najafi, immediately rejected the American statement. He called the accusations “baseless and politically motivated.”
The month-long NPT conference is expected to be tense throughout due to deep disagreements over Iran's nuclear program.
