Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that the security situation in the Balkans is seriously unstable.
"We also discussed all aspects of the protest announced on March 15," he wrote on Instagram, as he had previously stated that at the rally and blockade announced by Belgrade students in the middle of the month, he expects "the opposition to incite great violence."
Mass rallies organized so far by students in several major cities in Serbia, demanding accountability for the deaths of 15 people in the collapse of the railway station shelter in Novi Sad, have been peaceful and without incidents. But that hasn't stopped Vucic from warning of the worst, and blaming the protests for economic problems as well.
"We also discussed, among other things, the state of the economy in light of the current protests, as well as the damage these events have caused, which is reflected in the reduction in investments and other challenges for the economy," the Serbian head of state emphasized.
With months of blockades and protests, students and citizens who support them are demanding the publication of all documentation on the reconstruction of the Novi Sad Railway Station, to determine responsibility for the tragedy, the prosecution of those who attacked protest participants, and the termination of judicial proceedings initiated against those arrested in the demonstrations.
