The German lawmaker ran unopposed after securing support from the party's largest delegations following an internal power struggle late last year.
The EPP is the largest political force in Brussels. The party has 14 European commissioners, 12 leaders in the European Council and is the largest political group in the European Parliament with 188 lawmakers.
