"War" breaks out between Trump and Jeff Bezos, White House launches

Amazon is planning to show on each product how much President Donald Trump's tariffs are raising prices...

The White House has launched a frontal attack on Jeff Bezos' Amazon after the company announced it would put the cost of Trump's tariffs on every product. The White House described the plan as "hostile and political."

I just spoke to the president on the phone about the Amazon announcement. This is a hostile and political act by Amazon ,” White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said during a press conference Tuesday. Punchbowl News reported Tuesday that Amazon is planning to reveal soon how much President Donald Trump’s tariffs are increasing prices.

Leavitt cited a 2021 Reuters report on Amazon's relationship with a " Chinese propaganda wing ," holding up a copy of the article with the face of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. She called it " another reason why Americans should buy American products ."

When a reporter asked her about the status of Trump's relationship with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Leavitt dodged the question. " I'm not going to talk about the president's relationship with Jeff Bezos. But I will tell you that this is certainly a hostile and political act on the part of Amazon ," she added.

Bezos refused to endorse either Trump or former Vice President Kamala Harris during the presidential election. Weeks before the election, Bezos also blocked The Washington Post — which he owns — from endorsing either candidate, drawing harsh criticism and causing hundreds of thousands of readers to cancel their subscriptions to the paper. The Post's editorial board was preparing to endorse Harris.

But he was among several billionaire tech executives who led donations to Trump's inaugural fund earlier this year, with Amazon contributing $1 million, and has since met with the president at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. POLITICO has not independently confirmed Amazon's reported plans to disclose the costs of the fees.

In an interview with The Atlantic last week, Trump seemed pleased with the tech giant. “ He’s 100 percent honest ,” Trump said of Bezos. “ He’s been great ,” he added.

As Trump completes 100 days in office, his administration's tariff war on many allies, which he argues are not paying their fair share, has sent shockwaves through global markets. Trump has imposed and suspended blanket tariffs of 25 percent on America's two border allies, Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10 percent on almost every other country importing into the U.S., with higher tariffs - and since suspended - on countries his administration has argued are bad actors.

Trump has also imposed extremely high tariffs on China, in an escalation of hostility with the country. The White House has argued that Trump is close to agreements with many countries to ease the tariffs. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said at a briefing on Tuesday that he thinks the administration is "very close" to a deal with India, as well as South Korea and Japan. /Politico
