"The collapse of the Kakhovka dam", the UN raises the alarm: Over 40

The United Nations (UN) announced that 17,000 people have been affected by the floods after the collapse of the Kakhovka dam in Ukraine, and that this number could rise to 40,000.

A weekly press conference was held under the moderation of Rolando Gomez, Head of the Department of Media and External Relations of the Information Unit of the UN Office in Geneva.

The spokeswoman of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Shabia Mantoo, said that it is terrible that after the collapse of the Kakhovka dam, in addition to the settlements in the region, the city of Kherson, located 60 km away, remained under water.

According to Ukrainian officials, in addition to 80 towns and villages in the Kherson region, thousands of hectares of agricultural land have remained completely or partially under water. In the region controlled by the Ukrainian government, 17,000 people have been affected by the floods, and this number may rise to 40,000 ," Mantoo said.

This has also affected thousands of people who are in the regions under the temporary military control of Russia, announced Mantoo, who said: "So far, about 2,200 people have been evacuated or left the region ."

Mantoo said that in the region, clean water and sanitation are the most important needs and that hundreds of thousands of people do not have access to safe drinking water.

After informing that with the withdrawal of waters in the region, there will be serious humanitarian consequences, Mantoo emphasized that the Kherson region is one of the regions most affected by land mines in the country.

Meanwhile, the UN coordinator for humanitarian affairs for Ukraine, Denise Brown, who participated in the meeting via the Internet, stated that the region is experiencing a dramatic situation and that the flood, which is developing rapidly, has taken people by surprise.

Thus, access to drinking water is a major problem in the region, Brown said, adding that more food is needed for displaced people. Brown also said that due to the floods experienced, houses have remained under water, the environment has been destroyed and that the region has urgent and important needs.
