British emergency services said a man had been arrested after at least eight people were stabbed in northwest England on Monday.
Emergency services said they treated eight stabbing patients who were taken to three different hospitals, including Alder Hey Children's Hospital.
Police in Merseyside said armed officers arrested a man and confiscated a knife after reports of a stabbing incident just before midday.
There is no danger to the general public, police said. The Prime Minister of Great Britain, Keir Starmer, wrote on the social network X that he feels shocked by this incident.
“Horrible and deeply shocking news from Southport. I want to thank the police and the emergency service for the quick response", he said.
Alder Hey Children's Hospital said it has declared a major incident and that its emergency department is extremely busy.
He asked parents to bring their children to the emergency only in urgent cases./ REL
