Family members identified Corey Comperatore as the participant who was killed in the assassination attempt on former President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Comperatore was a fire chief for Buffalo Township, local news station WPXI reported. He was shot and killed when Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire on Trump from about 130 meters from the rally. Two others were seriously injured in the attack, authorities said.

The victim's sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, wrote in a Facebook post that Corey "was a hero who protected his daughters."

"His wife and daughters simply lived the unthinkable and the unimaginable. My little brother just turned 50 and had a lot of life left to experience. Hate knows no bounds and love knows no bounds. Pray for us as this feels like a horrible nightmare, but we know it is our painful reality," Schafer wrote.
