The massive protest that took place today in Slavija Square in Belgrade, under the slogan "You and me, Slavija", has ended without incident, while citizens are gradually dispersing from the area, N1 television reported.
Crowds on the streets around Slavija remained dense even after the protest ended, slowing down the movement of citizens. The Archive of Public Gatherings described the protest as one of the most massive since the beginning of student protests in Serbia.
Shortly before the rally ended, large numbers of police forces with riot gear were deployed near Pionirski Park and the Old Palace building. At the scene, the police cordon was expanded into three lines, while officers were transported by bus to the area around state institutions.
It is also reported that a group of people gathered near the National Assembly, avoiding contact with the media, and then entered Pionirski Park. Some of the people in the cordoned off area left the park.
Serbian media reporters reported a very large turnout at Slavija, comparing the atmosphere to the protest on March 15. The speeches began shortly after 6:00 PM, with students demanding that their demands be met by the institutions.
One student declared that the demands are not only of the students, but of “the rebellious people.” The rector of the University of Arts, Mirjana Nikolić, also spoke on stage, saying that “those who think they are gentlemen in this country are afraid of morality and culture.”
The protest was also attended by military veterans, who were greeted with applause by the crowd. A group of citizens arrived in Slavija with a banner in honor of the late Danas newspaper cartoonist, Predrag Koraksić Koraks.
Regarding the number of participants, the Archive of Public Gatherings stated that the protest could be among the largest student protests to date and warned of "misinformation and undercounting."
On the other hand, the director of the Serbian police, Dragan Vasiljević, said that around 34,300 people participated in the protest.
