Negotiators are working on a deal that would avoid a resumption of attacks and pave the way for discussions on Iran's nuclear program.
The United States and Iran may be close to an agreement to extend a 60-day ceasefire between the two countries, in an effort to avoid a return to conflict and open negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.
The news was reported by the Financial Times, which cited diplomatic sources involved in the mediation.
According to the report, the draft agreement provides not only for the extension of the ceasefire, but also for concrete steps to reduce tensions in the region, including the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important corridors for global oil transport.
The parties are also expected to discuss ways to reduce or surrender Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium, one of the most sensitive issues in negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
“ The deal seems to be moving in the right direction. It is now in the hands of the Americans for review ,” a diplomat told the Financial Times.
According to the same source, Iran may be willing to make more concessions regarding nuclear energy, but not as long as the war continues.
" This draft helps narrow the gap between the parties ," the diplomat added.
It is reported that the mediators have been in constant contact with US envoy Steve Witkoff during talks with the Iranian delegation led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
The mediators hope that the terms of the agreement will persuade US President Donald Trump not to resume attacks on Iran, following recent warnings from Washington about the possibility of a new military escalation.
The developments come at a critical moment for the region, as tensions between the US, Iran and their allies remain high despite a temporary ceasefire.
