A slow-moving but deadly hurricane is approaching Jamaica, threatening to bring torrential rains and destructive winds to the Caribbean island.
Hurricane Melissa, which was upgraded to a Category 5 storm early Monday, is expected to make landfall in the early hours of Tuesday.
Authorities fear that Hurricane Melissa, which has already been blamed for the deaths of four people on the island of Hispaniola, could become the strongest hurricane to ever hit Jamaica.
Meteorologists warn that Melissa's slow pace means it will bring torrential rain to affected areas for a longer period of time, increasing the risk of deadly flooding and landslides.
"This extreme rainfall potential, due to the slow movement, will create a catastrophic event here for Jamaica," said Jamie Rhome, deputy director of the US-based National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The Jamaican government has ordered evacuations for parts of the capital, Kingston, and the entire island has been classified as "threatened."
Meteorologists warned that the maximum wind speed is 270 km/h and could strengthen further in the next 12 to 24 hours.
Meteorologists say destructive winds and life-threatening storm surges are expected to hit Jamaica late Monday night or early Tuesday.
