Merz backs down after Trump's threats: Transatlantic partnership is special
German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has backed away from a clash with US President Donald Trump after the latter suggested the US could reduce its troops in Germany.

After his remarks angered Donald Trump, Merz changed course, stressing the importance of NATO and the transatlantic partnership.

“This transatlantic partnership is particularly close to our hearts and to me personally ,” Merz said, speaking at a military base in Munster.

Merz further said that his government is contributing to efforts to open the Strait of Hormuz, even though Germany needs this waterway for the bulk of its oil and gas supplies.

“We still have sufficient supplies of oil and gas. Relatively little of the supply for Europe passes through the Strait of Hormuz. The majority comes from other sources. However, shortages on global markets are, of course, also an important signal for price developments here. Therefore, everything is aimed, including my efforts, at making every possible contribution to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz ,” Merz said at a town hall event.

Recall that Trump harshly attacked Merz this week, after the German leader declared that Washington was being “humiliated” by Tehran’s negotiating tactics.
