US may deploy hypersonic weapons for the first time in the region
The United States is considering for the first time the possibility of deploying a hypersonic missile system in the Middle East, in a development that could affect the security balance in the region. According to Bloomberg, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has requested the deployment of the “Dark Eagle” system, with the aim of increasing the capacity for long-range strikes against targets inside Iranian territory.
Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that the request is justified by the movement of Iranian ballistic missile launchers beyond the range of the current Precision Strike system, which has a range of over 300 miles. In this context, the “Dark Eagle” is considered an alternative with a longer range and the ability to hit heavily defended targets that require a quick response.
If approved, this would be the first time the US has deployed a hypersonic weapon in an operational area, while the system has not yet been declared fully operational.
The request has not been officially made public and comes at a time when the US and Iran are implementing a fragile ceasefire, in effect since April 8. However, President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned of the possibility of resuming military action, while negotiations for a deal remain fruitless.
The Dark Eagle system, developed by the US military, has a reported range of about 1,725 miles and is designed for precision strikes over long distances. It targets targets that are time-sensitive and heavily defended, according to the Library of Congress. The price for one missile is estimated at about $15 million and their current number is limited, while a full battery can cost up to $2.7 billion.
In parallel, the US administration has taken additional economic measures against Iran. President Trump has extended a restrictive measure on Iranian oil exports, rejected a proposal from Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz to all ships and postponed discussions on the nuclear issue to a later stage.
The US president's statements on these measures have been direct, emphasizing pressure on Iran to change its position in the negotiations.
