Three months after the attack, more than 22,700 Gazans have been killed
It has been three months since the devastating Hamas attack that sparked Israel's war in Gaza, and the deadly fighting has led to a dire humanitarian crisis.
The Israeli army launched an offensive in the Palestinian enclave after Hamas militants launched a brutal attack on Israel on October 7, in which gunmen killed around 1,200 people and took more than 200 hostages, according to Israeli authorities.
Three months after the attack, more than 22,700 Gazans have been killed, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
The main moments of the conflict:
October 7: Hamas attack. The surprise attack by Hamas on October 7 marked the largest terrorist attack in Israel's history. At least 1,500 Hamas fighters poured across the border into Israel by land, sea and air. Immediately after the event, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel was "at war".
October 9: Israel orders a "total encirclement" of Gaza. Two days later, Netanyahu said the Israeli military would attack Hamas with a force "like never before" in order to destroy the militant group.
October 13: A growing exodus. The Israeli military told 1.1 million people in northern Gaza to evacuate their homes immediately as it stepped up its response. Since the beginning of the conflict, the United Nations estimates that some 1.9 million people have been displaced.
October 17: Hundreds killed in Gaza hospital. A deadly explosion occurred at the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza, which was housing thousands of people evacuated from areas under attack. CNN revealed that the blast was likely caused by a malfunctioning rocket fired by Palestinian militants.
October 27: Israel expands its ground offensive. After a war waged largely from the air, the Israel Defense Forces announced it was "expanding ground operations" in Gaza.
November 15: Al-Shifa hospital raid. Israel launched an operation against Hamas inside Gaza's largest hospital, where thousands of Palestinians were believed to be sheltering. Conditions at the hospital deteriorated rapidly during the days of fighting. The raid prompted international criticism.
November 24: Establishing a ceasefire. After days of careful negotiations, a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas brought a lull in fighting. As part of the ceasefire, civilian hostages captured by Hamas militants were released.
December 1: The ceasefire ends. A week later, the Israeli military resumed fighting against Hamas in Gaza, accusing the group of violating the terms of the ceasefire. Israel's focus began to shift from northern Gaza to southern Gaza.
December 15: Hostages are killed in a botched raid. Israeli soldiers shot and killed three Israeli hostages in northern Gaza after misidentifying them as posing a threat. The Israeli defense said the shooting was against the rules and that the soldiers involved would face disciplinary proceedings.
January 1: Israel announces partial withdrawal. On the first day of the new year, Israel announced it would soon begin withdrawing thousands of soldiers from Gaza in preparation for a new phase of the conflict, although a senior official warned he expected fighting to continue throughout the year. /CNN
