United States President Donald Trump called on Mexico to increase efforts in the fight against drug cartels, following a major operation by Mexican federal forces that ended with the killing of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), known as "El Mencho."
"Mexico must step up its efforts against cartels and drugs!" Trump wrote on his social platform, Truth Social.
Yesterday, federal security forces carried out a military operation in the city of Tapalpa, about 130 kilometers south of Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco. The target of the action was the structure of the CJNG, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico.
According to reports, the cartel leader, known as “El Mencho,” was killed during the clashes. As of press time, authorities have not released a detailed public statement on the official outcome of the operation.
Following the intervention of security forces, roadblocks and incidents of arson of vehicles and businesses were reported in several areas of Jalisco and other states. Local media have described these events as possible reprisals by criminal groups.
The Jalisco state government urged residents to stay home, suspended public transportation and activated a "red alert" due to threats to public safety.
Violence linked to drug cartels has escalated in several Mexican states in recent days, raising concerns about stability and security in the region.
