Bad weather in Spain/ Schools close and evacuations begin, authorities call

Authorities in eastern and southern Spain have closed schools and begun evacuating some residents as the country was lashed by torrential rain two weeks after catastrophic floods killed at least 215 people.

On Wednesday morning, the state meteorological agency, Aemet, put large parts of eastern and southern Spain on alert and issued the highest level of warning for the provinces of Tarragona in Catalonia and Málaga in Andalucia.

The Andalusian government closed schools in the provinces of Malaga and Granada and 3,000 people were evacuated from neighborhoods near the Guadalhorce River, which runs through Malaga province. High-speed rail services linking Madrid with Malaga and Valencia were suspended on Wednesday afternoon until at least midday on Thursday.

Malaga airport canceled one flight and diverted five others, while the local metro was closed.

Authorities in Catalonia urged people to take "maximum caution", while the regional government of Valencia, which has been criticized for its handling of the disaster, advised affected areas to close schools and recommended that people work from home.

Early Wednesday evening, Aemet raised the alert in the province of Valencia from orange to red.

"The risk is extreme. Avoid driving around as rivers may overflow. Be very careful!” writes Aemet in a post on X.

While the current storm is not expected to be as powerful as the last one, the impact of the rains could be severe due to the large amounts of mud already on the ground and the compromised state of the sewage system.

Almost 20,000 military personnel and police officers are still engaged in the clean-up operation in Valencia, which was the region hardest hit by the floods two weeks ago.
