The suspect in the murder of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk was arrested after confessing to the crime to his father, who helped capture the 22-year-old, authorities announced.
Tyler Robinson has been in custody since 10:00 p.m. local time, after being on the wanted list for 33 hours.
"We got it," Utah Governor Spencer Cox told reporters.
On the evening of September 11, a family member of Tyler Robinson contacted a family friend, who then contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office, providing information that Robinson had confessed or implied to them that he had committed the crime.
The family member is reported to have been his father, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to CBS News, who had recognized him from photos released during the search.
During his interview with Fox News, US President Donald Trump confirmed this, saying the suspect had been handed over by "someone very close."
Trump said the person who recognized the suspect went to the "father," who then "convinced the son."
Two law enforcement sources told CBS that Robinson had confessed to his father, who then urged him to turn himself in.
Robinson admitted to his father that he was the person in the photo, CBS sources said.
Robinson's father encouraged his son to turn himself in, but the 22-year-old told him he would prefer to kill himself.
The father contacted a family friend, who was reportedly a church pastor, and the pair tried to calm Robinson down.
The pastor then contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Office with the information.
Criminal charges against the 22-year-old are expected to be filed on Tuesday.
Robinson will be charged with aggravated murder, obstruction of justice and aggravated felony murder.
Robinson was a third-year student in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in southwest Utah, where he lived, a Utah Valley University (UVU) spokesman told the BBC.
He did not attend Utah Valley University, where the shooting occurred.
Robinson was reportedly an excellent student, with Sky News verifying what appears to be school records posted in 2020 by his mother, which show a 4.0 average, equivalent to full 100% grades in the UK.
Cox said at a press conference that authorities have no information that would lead to further investigations.
Kirk, 31, a right-wing activist and close ally of Donald Trump, was speaking to a crowd as part of his political rally tour when he was struck in the neck by a bullet.
The killing of the father of two has sparked an outpouring of anger from American conservatives and fueled fears of further political violence.
According to authorities, the perpetrator fired once from the roof. The video shows the person walking through the grass and crossing the road before disappearing.
"I can tell you this was a targeted event," said Robert Bohls, the FBI's senior agent in Salt Lake City.
Investigators said no motive for the killing has been determined.
But Cox, the Utah governor, said evidence included engravings on high-powered bullet casings believed to have been used in the attack, including one that said: "Hey, fascist."
