Russian oil continues to bypass sanctions, Zelensky calls for strong action

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep disappointment over the failure of European countries to effectively stop Russia's "shadow fleet," which transports sanctioned Russian oil through European and NATO waters, thereby financing the war against Ukraine.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News, Zelensky stressed the need for "urgent steps" to stop ships sailing through seas under the control of NATO member states.

"Some Europeans stop tankers, but they can't seize them because of their law. Should they? They should. They should change the law ," Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president noted that current sanctions on tankers are often easily circumvented by Russia, which changes the registration of ships to continue trading. He called for tougher measures, including sanctions not only on the ships but also on their captains and crews.

" It's good when they impose sanctions on tankers, but they change the registration and work to circumvent it. They should impose sanctions... also on captains and crews ," Zelensky added.

This statement comes at a time when hundreds of tankers of the "shadow fleet" have been documented passing through, despite Western sanctions. Such a fleet, estimated at up to 800 ships, is considered one of Russia's main tools to bypass oil price restrictions and the EU and G7 embargo, generating huge revenues that finance military aggression in Ukraine.

Zelensky has made repeated calls for stronger European and international intervention, warning that without concrete action, Russia will continue to exploit legal weaknesses to keep the war machine alive.
