"NATO would be ashes without me," Trump adds to threats and announces
Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump will hold an extraordinary press conference at the White House today, at 8:00 p.m. Central European Time, the US presidency officially announced.

The announcement comes in a tense climate within the Western alliance, after Trump himself again attacked NATO allies in a post on his Truth Social network, stating that it is only thanks to him that the alliance has not disintegrated.

“No person or president has done more for NATO than Donald J. Trump,” he wrote, referring to himself in the third person, as he often does in his political rhetoric.

"If I hadn't come, NATO wouldn't exist today! It would be in the archives of history. Sad, but true!", the post concludes, accompanied by three exclamation points that underline the defiant and triumphalist tone.

Trump has always been a harsh critic of NATO, accusing it of protecting countries that do not contribute enough financially, while the US, according to him, has borne the brunt for decades.

This latest statement comes at a critical moment, with international tensions rising, from the Arctic to the Middle East, and NATO's role seen as essential in maintaining global balances. Trump's comments have raised concerns in some European capitals about the real US commitment to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, in the event of a military crisis.

Eyes are now turned to the 8:00 PM press conference, where Trump is expected to clarify his position on the future of NATO, the US role in the alliance, and current global challenges.
