Accommodating Trump's whims about Greenland today means preparing to surrender to Ireland, Ibiza or Santorini tomorrow, perhaps because Ivanka went on vacation there and liked it, and the day after tomorrow, why not, to Sardinia or Sicily...
In the coming days, a decision will be made on how the European Union will respond to Donald Trump's new threats, which, in addition to the usual barrage of tariffs, now also raise the possibility of military aggression. The arguments used to justify the annexation of Greenland are ridiculous, have already been refuted practically everywhere, and are not worth wasting time and precious words on (if you have any doubts, it is an argument so stupid that even artificial intelligence agrees: ask it). After all, the United States, if it wanted to, could already station all its armed forces above, below and around Greenland today.
So the point is really simple and it goes like this: accommodating Trump's whims on Greenland today means preparing to surrender tomorrow to Ireland, Ibiza or Santorini, perhaps because Ivanka went on holiday there and liked it, and the day after tomorrow, why not, to Sardinia or Sicily. The idea that it is possible to mediate and find a compromise, as Giorgia Meloni argued two days ago and Guido Crosetto yesterday, means that we have learned nothing, after a whole year in which the whole world has seen Trump retreat whenever he faces a partner determined to gain respect, from China to Brazil, and instead seeks to take more and more whenever he faces the Europeans.
These Italian sovereignists are truly strange patriots, defending the unjustified, and in fact they risk ending up in the minority even among European sovereignists, where the voices calling for a firm response are increasing. For the moment, Meloni can rely above all on the prudence, to say the least, of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with whom she already formed a coalition last time, when it came to swallowing Trump's tariffs without daring even the slightest retaliation, thanking him in fact for his generosity (and here is the result). Without mentioning, of course, the usual fifth columns of all the enemies of the Union, such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán or Czech Prime Minister Andrei Babiš.
Given Ursula von der Leyen's natural inclinations and her obvious sensitivity to German positions, there is therefore a very serious risk of a repeat of the degrading spectacle of the last time, with unpredictable consequences for the stability of the European Union itself. On the other hand, Trump's own arrogance and impudence also offer an opportunity, for those willing to exploit it, to shock public opinion and appeal, if not to pride, if not to rationality, then at least to survival instincts.
For once, the opposition has the opportunity to do something useful, for themselves and even for Italy, but it must do it now. In short, it is time for European patriots, this is the last chance to hold our sovereignists accountable, pushing our country to demand from the EU a response worthy of the challenge, from appropriate counter-tariffs to the notorious instrument of coercion, which France rightly seeks to use and which von der Leyen is already threatening to set aside, once again.
Anyone with a voice would do well to raise it now, because the consequences of a final European surrender to Trump's military and tariff blackmail will be very costly, in every sense, for everyone./ Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "Linkiesta"
