The UN's top humanitarian official and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, has stated that Trump's Peace Board will not replace his organization.
" I am clear and my colleagues are clear that the United Nations is not going anywhere ," he told CNN when asked if the Peace Board is an attempt to replace the UN.
Fletcher emphasized that the UN was built for difficult times and that 2026 is a challenge that will be overcome.
"The United Nations was not built for easy times, but for difficult times, and 2026 looks set to be a difficult year, but we are fully focused on providing assistance to the hundreds of millions of people around the world we serve ," he added.
The Board's charter, obtained by the Times of Israel and confirmed as authentic by two sources to CNN, describes it as an "international organization" that works to "ensure lasting peace in areas affected by or threatened by conflict," raising concerns across the international community that Trump is seeking a broad mandate that extends beyond Gaza, which is not mentioned by name in the document.
Expressing support for Trump's plan, Fletcher urged the Peace Board to focus on Gaza and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
"No one cares more about peace than we do. All of us want to see the success of President Trump's plan for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in security, justice and opportunity, and I hope that this Peace Board will be very focused on that," he concluded.
