Greenland has sounded the alarm. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has said the country must begin preparing for an extreme scenario, a possible military invasion by the United States. Although he described such a conflict as "impossible," Nielsen stressed that nothing can be ruled out, urging citizens and institutions to be prepared for any eventuality.
" Greenland is part of NATO and any military intervention against us will have consequences that go far beyond our borders ," he declared from the capital Nuuk, underlining the need to increase the military presence and strengthen domestic defense, at a time when the security climate in the Arctic is deteriorating.
Greenland's reaction comes after repeated provocations by Donald Trump, who has revived rhetoric about annexing the island. Before leaving for the Davos Economic Forum, Trump published an artificial intelligence-generated photo on the Truth Social network, showing him, along with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, "invading" Greenland.
The European Union and Canada have reacted immediately, condemning Trump's destabilizing rhetoric and expressing unwavering support for Greenland and its sovereignty within NATO's defense.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas declared: “ Greenland belongs to its people. No threat or tariff will change that .” Along the same lines, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared from Davos that “ our commitment to NATO’s Article 5 is unwavering ,” adding that Canada strongly opposes any commercial or military imposition on Greenland’s territory.
Against the backdrop of this escalation, Greenland is emerging from the shadows as a key strategic point in the Arctic, while the new game of great powers for control of the cold north is turning into a real threat to global stability. /Pamphlet
