The European Union has sounded the alarm that the return of Donald Trump to the White House could end NATO. The former president himself has warned him, but it seems that there have been conversations and warnings since he was in office.
European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton has recounted how Trump warned in a private conversation that America would not come to the aid of the EU if it was attacked militarily, Politico reports .
" You have to understand that if Europe is under attack, we will never come to your aid and support ," Trump told European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in 2020, according to French European Commissioner Thierry Breton, who was also present during the tense meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Breton, at the same time one of the highest politicians in Europe, emphasized that in his presence Trump had explicitly said that: " NATO is dead and we will leave, we will leave NATO. And by the way, you owe me 400 billion dollars, because you don't pay, you Germans, what you should have paid for defense ."
Breton recounted the story during a European Parliament event Tuesday in Brussels, just days before the Republican Party convenes its caucus Jan. 15 in Iowa; where the race unfolds and at the same time Trump's efforts to win the Republican nomination to return to the White House.
" That was a big wake-up call and he can come back. So now more than ever, we know we are alone, of course. We are members of NATO, almost all of them, of course we have allies, but we have no choice but to drastically increase this pillar in order to be ready for whatever happens , "said Breton.
