Fito often defies the authorities, and in a recent taunt, he released a music video called "narcocorrido" glorifying his criminal exploits, which was partly recorded inside prison.
Since Los Choneros gang leader Adolfo Macías, aka 'Fito', escaped from his cell in a low-security prison in Ecuador, more attacks have occurred across the country.
The scale of the country's security crisis was on public display yesterday when masked gunmen entered a TV studio and unleashed 15 minutes of threats and fear on live broadcast.
The horror footage showed a man with a pistol in the middle of the screen, followed by a second man with a shotgun, then a third armed man. Screams followed by gunshots were heard. They forced terrified reporters and production staff to lie on the ground, with a woman heard in the background; "Don't shoot, please don't shoot!"
The government has said at least 30 attacks have occurred since authorities reported Fito missing. It is still not clear if Fito managed to escape from the prison complex in the port city or if he could be hiding somewhere inside.
A police commander said he could "neither confirm nor deny" an escape, nor could he say how long the convict had been missing, but said hundreds of officers were searching the prison.
But who is Fito?
José Adolfo Macías, popularly known as 'Fito' is the man who plunged Ecuador into a national crisis by escaping from prison on Sunday. According to the British media, he is the head of one of the most notorious drug groups in Latin America, which he directed from behind bars.
The 44-year-old is the leader of the Los Choneros cartel, which until recent years was undoubtedly Ecuador's largest and most feared gang, accused of murder and drug trafficking.
Despite being in prison since 2011, the 44-year-old took over the leadership of the cartel in 2020 and has since coordinated its activities from within his "private bunker".
Los Choneros is a prison gang that engages in drug trafficking and extortion, and many of its members are incarcerated. There are reports that the group operates as an operative arm of Mexico's notorious Sinaloa cartel. Fito has also been linked to a more recent political assassination. Leading up to the country's election last year, candidate Fernando Villavicencio - who was a vocal critic of powerful drug cartels - was assassinated in the capital Quito in August. Days before his death, Villavicencio said he and his team had received threats from Fito and Los Choneros.
Fito often defies the authorities, and in a recent taunt, he released a music video called "narcocorrido" glorifying his criminal exploits, which was partly recorded inside prison.
The video shows him singing with his daughter, known as Queen Michelle. Fito is also seen petting a belligerent rooster and casually chatting with other inmates. Fito has previously escaped from the prison compound. In 2013, he and 17 other prisoners were released and left by boat on the Daule River, which borders the compound. He and his brother, another member of Los Choneros, were captured four months later at their mother's home in the town of Manta. Since then Fito has been in prison./ Adapted "Pamphlet" from " The Mirror "
