The US defends the idea of a two-state solution, Blinken calls for reform

As part of his visit to the Middle East, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met today with Palestinian leaders to discuss reforms in the Palestinian Authority that governs the West Bank, as part of US efforts to foster regional support for the future of Gaza, which includes concrete steps for the creation of a Palestinian state.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today that he has secured the commitment of several countries in the region to help with the reconstruction and governance of Gaza after the end of the war and that normalization between Arab countries and Israel is possible only if a plan for the creation of a Palestinian state.

According to US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, Secretary Blinken told Palestinian leaders that the United States supports "concrete steps towards the creation of a Palestinian state" and that during talks in the West Bank he urged Palestinian interlocutors to reform their governance in preparation for this stage.

For all the push for a post-war Gaza plan, the US plan faces serious obstacles. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government oppose the creation of a Palestinian state. Many Palestinians oppose the governance of Gaza by the Palestinian Authority, which, although supported by the West, is considered autocratic and without legitimacy.

Secretary Blinken's visit to Ramallah was met with protests.

"It is a shame that they cut Blinken, one of the organizers of the genocide in the Gaza Strip. He is leading the war in the Gaza Strip, against our people. Our people in Gaza are being killed by American bombs. It's a shame to wait here ," says Palestinian activist Jamal Jumaa.

Israeli attacks on Gaza, which are estimated to have left 23,000 dead, continued on Wednesday. The United States is asking Israel to reduce the intensity of the fighting, but not a ceasefire, White House spokesman for National Security John Kirby told VOA.

"We continue to support humanitarian pauses, but not a general ceasefire at this time. The president has not changed his position at all ," he declared.

The war between Israel and the militant group Hamas, which governs Gaza, has also divided American voters in this election year in the United States. A few days ago, during an election rally, President Biden was confronted by protesters who asked him to pressure Israel for a ceasefire.

According to the professor of international relations at Harvard University, Melanie Cammet, the conflict has put the American president in a difficult position.

" The American administration and President Biden himself are in a very difficult position, because a large part of the American public still strongly supports the alliance between Israel and the United States, and for him any attempt not to support Israel one hundred percent is seen as threat to this alliance ," she said.

Meanwhile, new negotiations began in Egypt on Wednesday for an exchange of hostages kidnapped by Hamas on October 7 and Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons./ VOA
