The Egyptian businessman, Mohamed Al Fayed, passed away at the age of 94.

His death comes almost 26 years after the Paris car crash that killed his eldest son Dodi and Diana, Princess of Wales on 31 August 1997.

Al Fayed was born in Alexandria and was the son of a teacher. In his native country, he opened his own transport business, before becoming an adviser to one of the world's richest men, the Sultan of Brunei, in 1966.

When he moved to the UK in the 1970s, Al-Fayed joined the board of mining conglomerate Lonrho in 1975, but left nine months later.

In 1979, he and his brother Ali bought the Ritz Hotel in Paris.

In 1985, Al Fayed and his brother managed to take control of the prestigious shopping center Harrods in London for 615 million pounds, holding it until 2010.

The death of his son, Dodi, in the accident with Princess Diana, left its mark on the rest of Mohamad Al Fayed's life.
