Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he spoke with the regional head of the Red Cross, Julien Lerisson, and asked him to commit to providing food and medical care to hostages held in Gaza. The statement comes after Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad released two Israeli hostages, Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski, in a visibly serious condition.
He said he had told Lerisson that the lie about the famine spread by Hamas is being spread around the world, adding that a systematic starvation is being carried out against Israeli hostages.
"The world cannot remain indifferent to shocking images that bring to mind Nazi crimes," Netanyahu said, calling on countries to condemn Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Israel has been accused of deliberately creating a famine in Gaza by restricting food supplies inside the enclave. Israel denies it is responsible for the food shortages and says claims of a famine in Gaza are propaganda by Hamas, but aid groups have accused the Israeli government of creating chaos, starvation and death.
