Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was trying to pour cold water on any suggestion that Israel had any influence on Donald Trump's decision to launch Operation Epic Fury on Iran. In the US, there has been considerable internal debate over the reasons why the US entered the war and the role Israel played. This debate culminated earlier this week with the resignation of Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center.
In his resignation letter, Kent, an early Trump ally and veteran of the US special operations community, said it is clear that we started this war because of pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.
He expanded on these views in a subsequent two-hour interview with conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, saying that "Israel pushed the decision" and that Israeli officials were bypassing normal channels to influence US lawmakers to push forward with the war.
And just yesterday, Trump used social media to deny previous reports that the US had advance knowledge of an Israeli attack on Iran's South Pars oil field, a message that some interpreted as disappointment on the part of the US president.
With his remarks, Netanyahu was clearly trying to address, albeit indirectly, any suggestion that US and Israeli war aims are not in sync./ BBC
