Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has reiterated his call for a ceasefire and the start of negotiations with Israel, during a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, AFP reported.
Aoun declared that the escalation of the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel must stop and demanded international guarantees to ensure the implementation of a ceasefire. According to the Lebanese presidency, he stressed that his initiative for negotiations remains valid, but military developments are preventing its launch.
Lebanon was drawn into the regional conflict on March 2, after Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel in response to the killing of a senior Iranian-linked figure in Israeli-American strikes. Israel responded with intensive airstrikes and ground operations, which, according to official sources, have caused over a thousand casualties.
On March 9, Aoun presented a four-point plan that includes a complete ceasefire, support for the Lebanese army with the aim of disarming Hezbollah, and the launch of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel under international supervision.
For his part, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that his visit to Lebanon aims to express France's solidarity with the Lebanese people, who, according to him, are involved in a conflict they did not choose themselves. During his stay in Beirut, he also held meetings with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and visited a shelter for those displaced by the war.
The French Foreign Ministry announced that the talks focused on the security situation and ways to reduce tensions.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron held phone calls with Lebanese leaders and called on Israel to accept direct negotiations with the Lebanese government. He also expressed France's readiness to mediate and host talks in Paris.
