Although we are in the 21st century, the world is still at risk of armed conflicts, and this was very well proven by the war in Ukraine.
The world can be a very dangerous place and world leaders must invest in their militaries in order to keep their countries safe. But have you ever wondered which countries in the world spend the most on their military? Here are 20 countries that have military budgets that reflect that fact.
Every year the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) compiles a report on world military spending, and the numbers may surprise you.
Based on SIPRI's latest information on 2021 global totals, the world's nations collectively spent $2,113,000,000,000 in US dollars on their military expenditures.
"In 2021, world military spending exceeded two trillion dollars for the first time, reaching $2,113 billion," SIPRI's April 2022 Military Expenditure report said.
While 2,113 billion may seem like a lot, the statistics become even more disturbing when you realize that just 20 countries account for 85% of all that spending.
Here is a list of those countries in order from highest to lowest, and it should come as no surprise that the United States of America tops the list with over 800 billion in military spending, surpassing its closest competitor, China.
