From tariffs, to Taiwan and Hormuz / Trump reveals details from discussions with
Donald Trump

In another part of his statements, Trump said he made "no commitment in any direction" regarding Taiwan during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, following Beijing's warnings that mishandling the issue could lead to conflict between the two countries .

US President Donald Trump reacted to his visit to Beijing, revealing details of his discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During his return to the US on Air Force One, Trump spoke about Iran's nuclear program, did not rule out the possibility of a new US military operation, and touched on the issue of Taiwan, as well as tariffs.

Specifically, Trump stated that he would accept a suspension of Iran's nuclear program for 20 years, provided that Tehran's commitment was "real," while also leaving open the possibility of new American military operations in the country.

"I would agree with that, as long as the engagement is real ," the US president was quoted as saying, adding that the US may have to return to Iran to do "a little cleanup work," without giving further details.

"We have essentially eliminated their armed forces. We may have to do some cleanup work, because we had a ceasefire of about a month, I would call it," he said.

Trump also claimed that the United States agreed to the ceasefire largely after pressure from other countries, especially Pakistan. " I wasn't actually in favor of it, but we did it as a favor to Pakistan," he said.

In parallel, the US president dismissed reports that Iran still retains a large portion of its missile launchers, calling them "fake news ." "We were hitting them like piñatas," he told reporters.

"The missile launchers have largely disappeared," he added, stressing that the US could quickly destroy even those that remain in the event of a new intervention in Iran.

No commitment to Taiwan

In another part of his statements, Trump said he made "no commitment in any direction" regarding Taiwan during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, following Beijing's warnings that mishandling the issue could lead to conflict between the two countries.

"He (Xi) feels very strongly about Taiwan. I made no commitment in any direction," Trump said. Asked if the Chinese president was suggesting there was a risk of a clash with the US over Taiwan, Trump downplayed the possibility.

"I don't believe there is a conflict, other than the fact that we don't need their power, we don't need Taiwan," he said.

The US president also left open the issue of future US arms sales to Taiwan. " I'll make a decision ," he replied when asked about the subject.

Meanwhile, Trump revealed that he and Xi did not discuss the issue of tariffs during their two-day talks. “ We did not discuss tariffs,” he said. “They pay tariffs. They pay significant tariffs, but we did not discuss it at all. It was not even brought up as a topic,” he added.

US and Chinese trade representatives had met earlier in South Korea, where they held positive talks, according to China's state news agency Xinhua, just hours before Trump arrived in Beijing. After the two leaders met in South Korea in October, Trump had lowered the total level of tariffs on Chinese goods to 47%.

The US president also said he was considering lifting sanctions on Chinese companies that buy oil from Iran, as the war and volatility in energy markets continue.

"I will make a decision within the next few days. We discussed it," he told reporters on his return from a state visit to China.

Asked if Xi was committed to pressuring Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Trump replied: "I'm not asking for favors, because when you ask for favors, you have to return them."

He added that he believes Xi wants the Strait to remain open, noting that China gets a significant portion of its oil from the Gulf.

In parallel, Trump claimed that the US " gets nothing" from the region and " does not need it."
