From Trump's jealousy to King Charles' jokes; what happened during the

King Charles' visit to the US has generated a series of reactions, as international media have struggled to uncover details beyond official statements. But a great deal of media attention has been paid to the salient moments, even the way Charles and Trump shook hands or exchanged hugs.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump exited the White House to greet King Charles and Queen Camilla, as their car pulled up at the south entrance.

Trump and Charles shook hands, and the first lady and the queen kissed each other on both cheeks. The Trumps and royals then stood for a photo, while Trump quickly turned to the king to speak in a low voice. The president pointed at him and said, so that the media could hear, "he gave a great speech. I was very jealous."

They posed for a few seconds, continuing to chat during the photos, then went inside. The president and king wore dark suits and white shirts to the state dinner, while the first lady and queen wore colors, the queen in a darker shade and the first lady in a lighter shade.

The Queen wore a Fiona Clare evening gown with an amethyst and diamond necklace, given to Queen Victoria by a former Duchess of Kent, which was later passed down to Queen Mary, according to Buckingham Palace. Camilla did not wear a tiara, a striking departure from typical royal protocol for senior female members of the British royal family when attending state dinners.

The first lady wore a Christian Dior Haute Couture gown, white gloves, and Dior pale delphinium silk shoes.

Charles' jokes

King Charles III, speaking after President Donald Trump, hailed the NATO alliance and the US-UK trade and defence relationship to combat growing global challenges.

"Our people have fought and fallen together in defense of the values we cherish across the ocean and from coast to coast. We have traded, innovated, and created together."

"We have stood together through the best of times and the worst of times," the king said, adding, "however, the challenges we face now range from those who wish us ill around the world, to balancing the risks and opportunities of powerful new technologies, to threats to the international rules that have allowed us to trade and kept power in balance for 80 years."

He also said that "freedom is under attack" due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"Today, our partnerships in NATO and AUKUS deepen our technological and military cooperation and ensure that together we can meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and contested world," the king said.

Charles also appeared at the state dinner without forgetting the jokes about past US-UK relations.

He called the president's second term "historic" and said it was a pleasure to "return to this magnificent building, the heart of your democracy." He joked that he had noticed "the readjustments in the East Wing," adding that the British contributed to "the redevelopment of the White House estate in 1814" when British forces burned the White House building.

He also mentioned states and cities, including Charleston and Annapolis, named after British monarchs, and presented Trump with a bell that hung on HMS Trump, a Royal Navy submarine that fought in the Battle of the Pacific in World War II, jokingly saying: "if you ever need to contact us, just call us."
