King Charles and Donald Trump used humor and jokes during speeches at a state dinner, giving a lighter tone to an official ceremony.
Trump began his speech with a wry comment about the reaction in Congress: "I want to congratulate Charles on a fantastic speech today in Congress... He made the Democrats stand up, I could never do that."
The king responded with a humorous observation about the changes in the White House: “ I cannot help but notice the ‘renovations’ in the East Wing, Mr. President, following your visit to Windsor Castle last year.”
He also included a historical reference, saying: "I regret to say that we Britons, of course, made our attempt at 'real estate development' of the White House in 1814."
Charles then referred to a previous statement by Trump: "You recently said, Mr. President, that if it weren't for the United States, European countries would speak German. I dare say, if it weren't for us, you would speak French…!"
At the end of his speech, he quoted a line from Shakespeare and thanked Trump for the "excellent dinner," jokingly adding that it was a "significant improvement over the 'Boston Tea Party,'" in reference to American rebels who dumped British tea into the harbor during the colonial period.
King Charles III's visit to the United States was intended as a celebration of America's 250th anniversary, of enduring Anglo-American ties, and of the so-called "special relationship." However, it was also seen as a mission to improve relations.
The current state of US-UK relations is tense, due to London's reluctance to fully support the joint US-Israeli war against Iran. In this context, the King's aim was to defuse these tensions through a diplomatic approach, particularly through his speech to both houses of Congress.
