US nuclear envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to meet in Istanbul on Friday to discuss a possible deal on Iran's nuclear program, Axios reported, citing three sources involved in the preparations for the meeting.

One of them described a showdown this week as a “best-case scenario,” but warned that nothing is certain until confirmed. This would be the first formal meeting between the US and Iran since the failure of negotiations and the 12-day war last June.

The meeting comes at a time of high tensions, with a massive US military buildup in the Persian Gulf and former President Trump stressing that only a quick deal can avoid a military conflict. According to Axios, the diplomatic standoff is the result of efforts brokered by Turkey, Egypt and Qatar in recent days.

In this context, Prince Khalid bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's defense minister, has urged the US to act on Iranian threats, warning that if Trump does not act, Iran will emerge stronger. This stance seems to contrast with Riyadh's public line, which has so far been careful to avoid escalating a conflict in the region. Just three weeks ago, Prince Mohammed bin Salman had expressed strong concerns to Trump about the risk of a regional war, contributing to the postponement of a possible attack.
