Minnesota was rocked on the morning of June 14 by a politically motivated attack that left two dead and two injured. The targets of the attack were senior figures in the state Democratic Party.
Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were shot dead in their Brooklyn Park home by a man dressed in a police uniform who used a vehicle disguised as a patrol car to enter their residence. The gunman is still at large and authorities are searching for him in a statewide manhunt.
In a similar parallel attack in Champlin, state Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot in their home. Both survived and are out of danger, but are under close medical attention.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the incident as a “politically motivated assassination” and a “calculated act of terrorism,” noting that the targets were key figures in the state’s progressive administration. “This was not a spontaneous act. There were clear objectives. There were political goals. There was an intent to intimidate and destabilize,” Walz said at a press conference.
According to initial investigations, the attacker used tactics that mimicked police operations, with a uniform, a patrol vehicle and controlled entry to the two homes. Authorities are warning the public to be extremely vigilant and not open the door to anyone who is not correctly identified.
US intelligence services and federal investigators are involved in the case, while the FBI has classified the case as a "high-level threat to homeland security."
The incident has sparked strong reactions across the country. President Joe Biden and senior Congressional officials have condemned the act, calling it a "direct attack on democracy."
It is the first time in years that an active lawmaker has been killed inside US territory in a politically motivated act. Security analysts warn that the incident could further fuel tensions in an already polarized climate.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are not ruling out the possibility of extremist networks being involved. Meanwhile, the state of Minnesota remains on red alert.
