Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant detailed the plan to defeat Hamas at a defense committee meeting, but gave no indication of how he plans to oversee the region when the fighting stops.
Speaking at a meeting of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in Tel Aviv, Gallant laid out Israel's strategy to defeat the group responsible for the October 7 surprise attack that killed more than 1,300 Israelis.
He told committee members that the war will unfold in three distinct phases.
The first phase, which is underway, will include a military campaign of airstrikes and later ground maneuvers "in order to destroy operatives and damage infrastructure to defeat and destroy Hamas," Gallant said.
The second phase will still involve fighting, but at a reduced intensity as troops shift their focus to "eliminating areas of resistance" that remain in the region.
Finally, Gallant said that as the war enters its third phase, Israel will work to establish a "new security regime" in Gaza.
Notably, this final phase will include "removing Israel's responsibility for daily life in the Gaza Strip," which will bring "a new security reality for the citizens of Israel" and those living near Gaza.
However, the New York Post writes, his words lacked any indication of what it means for Israel to abdicate any responsibility for Gaza and its 2.2 million inhabitants, a territory that is entirely dependent on Israel for essential services such as water and electricity.
