Palestinian officials say Israeli strikes Monday night in southern Gaza, including near the Rafah border crossing, killed 49 people.
More than 1,300 people in Israel have been killed by Hamas since October 7, and more than 2,700 people have died in Israeli retaliatory attacks in Gaza.
In Gaza City's Dar Al Shifa hospital, the living sleep among beds filled with patients, in corridors and even on the grounds, while the dead flood the morgue.
The name Dar Al Shifa translates as "house of healing" and tens of thousands have sought not only healing but shelter from the bombardment that rained down on Gaza City hourly, praying that the hospital would provide protection.
Stamped blankets are hung over the iron railings of the entryway to provide shade, while a few people are gathered around the stairs with their children and what's left of their belongings.
Shifa is not only Gaza's largest medical facility, but the nerve center of its entire health care system, and the Israeli assault on the territory has brought it to breaking point. Local authorities and aid groups in Gaza estimate that between 35,000 and 40,000 people have taken refuge there.
"Doctors have brought their families to the hospital for safety. I slept on an operating room table last night," said Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah, one of the surgeons, speaking to the Guardian on the phone.
When Israeli artillery began pounding Gaza from the sky and sea, destroying entire city blocks after Hamas militants who rule the territory launched a murderous assault on Israel, many in Gaza City followed a procedure they had learned from previous attacks and they left for the hospital.
