A group of 25 Republican US congressmen have threatened punitive measures against France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia if the four countries recognize Palestine during the UN General Assembly, which opens tomorrow in New York.
"Recognizing Palestine is a reward for terrorism," says the letter signed by Republican House Speaker Elise Stefanik and Senator Rick Scott.
The congressmen also emphasize that recognition "undermines prospects for peace" and "strengthens Hamas's violence," recalling the Israeli hostages still being held and the attack of October 7, 2023.
According to the signatories, such an action legitimizes a terrorist state and endangers the security of the countries involved. The Israeli prime minister also opposed the recognition of the Palestinian state.
"The creation of a Palestinian state would endanger the survival of Israel. We will have to fight, both in the UN and in all other forums, against the false propaganda directed at us and against calls for a Palestinian state, which would endanger our existence and represent an absurd reward for terrorism. The international community will hear our voice on this issue in the coming days," said Benjamin Netanyahu.
"After the UN General Assembly, I will meet with my friend, President Trump. It will be the fourth time I have met with him since the beginning of his second term, more than any other world leader. And we have a lot to discuss ," he added.
