No elections in France, Macron appoints new prime minister
France's new Prime Minister, Sebastien Lecornu

Sebastien Lecornu has been appointed the new Prime Minister of France.

Lecornu has held the post of Minister of the Armed Forces and is a loyal supporter of President Emmanuel Macron.

The choice of Lecornu, 39, shows Macron's determination not to go to new elections,

Macron was forced to appoint a fifth prime minister in less than two years after parliament dismissed Francois Bayrou nine months into office over his plans to ease the country's growing debt.

Lecornu will now face the dual challenge of leading France out of the financial crisis while leading a government prepared for mass protests.

The presidency announced today that Sébastien Lecornu has been tasked with "consulting" with the parties with the aim of "building essential agreements for decisions in the coming months."

" After these discussions, it will be the duty of the new Prime Minister to propose a government to the President of the Republic ," the statement continues.

Recall that before the vote of confidence, Bayrou warned lawmakers that his ouster would not solve the country's problems.

You have the power to overthrow the government, but you do not have the power to erase reality. Reality will remain ruthless: spending will continue to rise and the debt burden, already unbearable, will become heavier and more costly ,” he said.

Who is Sebastien Lecornu?

Lecornu, 39, was the youngest Defense Minister in France's history and the architect of a significant increase in the military budget until 2030, spurred by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

A former conservative who joined Macron's centrist movement in 2017, he has held positions in local administration, territories outside France, and during the "yellow vest" crisis, where he played a key role in organizing a national debate to calm citizens' anger through dialogue.

In 2021, he also offered talks on autonomy during unrest in Guadeloupe.

In the 2014 municipal election, Lecornu was elected Mayor of Vernon and left the Vernon municipality on December 4, 2015.

In 2017, Lecornu was appointed Secretary of State to the Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition by President Emmanuel Macron.

Lecornu was subsequently suspended from his duties within the Republicans by the party and disciplinary proceedings for expulsion were initiated against him. He was expelled from the LR on 31 October 2017.

On October 16, 2018, Lecornu was appointed Minister of Local Authorities under the Minister of Territorial Cohesion and Relations with Local Authorities, Jacqueline Gourault.

On July 6, 2020, Lecornu was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Castex government.

On May 20, 2022, Lecornu was appointed Minister of Armed Forces in the Borne government.
