White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said the Trump administration was notified of the attack in the early hours of the morning, but stressed that the action was unilateral on Israel's part.
US President Donald Trump has clearly distanced himself from Israel's airstrike on the capital of Qatar, calling it an "unfortunate incident" that occurred in a country that the United States considers a close ally and friend.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said the Trump administration was notified of the attack in the early hours of the morning, but stressed that the action was unilateral on Israel's part.
" The unilateral bombing inside the territory of Qatar, a sovereign state and close ally of the United States that is taking bold risks by working with us to broker peace, serves neither Israel nor America's goals ," Leavitt declared.
The spokeswoman stressed that the White House remains steadfast in its stance against Hamas, describing the organization as a group that has “profited from the misery of the people of Gaza.” However, Washington did not hide its dissatisfaction with the fact that the operation took place precisely in Qatar, a state that plays a key role in brokering the ceasefire.
"The president views Qatar as a strong friend and ally of the United States and feels deeply saddened by the location of this attack," Leavitt added.
US: Qatar was warned
A significant detail that is stirring debate is the fact that the US special envoy, Steve Witkoff, had warned Qatar of the impending attack, although it was not clarified whether the warning was given in time enough to take protective measures. This fact shows that Washington was fully aware of the operation, but did not intervene to stop it.
In direct questions from reporters about the relationship between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Leavitt said: “The president has made his thoughts very clear, and that’s all I’m going to say.”
When asked if there would be concrete consequences for Netanyahu, the spokeswoman replied that "only the president can make that decision."
This formulation leaves open the possibility of new tension between the two leaders, even though Trump tried to balance his pro-Israel stance with protecting Qatar as a key regional partner.
At the end of the statement, Leavitt added that President Trump believes that "this unfortunate incident can serve as an opportunity for peace," hinting that the current crisis could be used to push the parties towards a clearer ceasefire agreement.
