"We don't want to die for Israel, we don't want to be political pawns"...
As the US-Israeli war against Iran enters its fourth week and President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of thousands of additional sailors and soldiers to the Middle East, the troops he relies on appear increasingly wary of the conflict.
Interviews with active-duty soldiers, reservists and advocacy groups focused on service members found that some U.S. troops who are involved in war report vulnerability, high stress, frustration and disillusionment to the point of leaving the military. The reservists and active-duty soldiers spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation or because they were not authorized to speak to the press.
A military official treating soldiers evacuated from the Middle East at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany amid Iran's retaliation said troops are suffering from "inadequate force protection and planning" and are already reporting a high number of casualties from Iranian ballistic missiles and drones that have repeatedly struck U.S. military facilities. Thirteen troops have been killed in the war so far, seven from attacks, and at least 232 have been wounded.
"A ground operation would be an absolute disaster... we don't have a plan for that. We can't fully defend even a single ground base in theater," the official said earlier this week.
A veteran and reservist who serves as a mentor to new officers told HuffPost that her contacts are expressing a loss of trust on a new scale.
“ I am hearing from the mouths of the soldiers the words: 'We don't want to die for Israel, we don't want to be political pawns ,'” she said.
Another reservist who is in contact with current troops separately reported hearing similar comments.
"I've shared information about conscientious objectors six times in the last two weeks and I've been in the military for almost 20 years, I've never had people contact me like this ," the first reservist continued.
Mike Prysner, executive director of the Center on Conscience and War, said his group in past years has taken in between 50 and 80 troops each year. March has seen a 1,000% increase, he added, saying at least one new service member now contacts the organization every day. On Friday, he wrote in X that his group is processing “expedited” applications for demobilization from Army, Navy and Marine personnel who have been told they will be deployed this weekend.

Troops are citing reservations about participating in a U.S.-Israeli operation based on their observation of the devastation caused by the U.S.-backed Israeli offensive in Gaza since 2023, and younger Americans have become much more skeptical of Tel Aviv. An NBC News poll this month found that 63% of voters under 34 now view Israel negatively, compared with 37% in 2023.
Meanwhile, many veterans are warning publicly and privately that Washington appears to be on the verge of a costly quagmire similar to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. One reservist noted that such a portrayal could reach younger troops more easily now than when soldiers deployed for those campaigns 20 years ago, given the more candid discussions of the failures of those wars and the proliferation of social media. Even before the recent turmoil, the Trump administration’s broader treatment of troops and the Defense Department has also prompted alarm among military personnel.
Experts on civil-military relations and the law of war have condemned these troop deployments, as well as the apparent violations of international law in the ongoing US military attacks on suspected drug ships in the Caribbean and Pacific. / Adapted from “Pamphlet” by “HuffPost”
